This week has been very busy. While we were working on some incredible features which we will introduce in our communicator pretty soon we brought a new voice over IP company up and running. The CEO contacted us less than two weeks ago after he had experienced a very common path of how people approach the set up a VoIP business. You download Asterisk (this really cool business PBX) and maybe SER or openSER. This gives you two pretty nice pieces of infrastructure. So and what is next? You need of course a website to have customers sign up and to give them the possibility to see their online itemized bills or provision new phones etc. Since he wanted to serve retail customers a prepaid functionality was planned. And multiple currencies and languages. Credit card payments were a must as well. Of course it is also imperative to have integrated customer service tools. Since just placing calls is not enough anymore a voice mail server is important and several other features. How about giving customers one account which then can be used as a calling card as well as with a SIP softp hone from a laptop - and all that needs to scale, multiple Asterisk servers etc.. I have seen many people being busy writing requirements over weeks and the list always seems to get longer and every feature triggers new requirements in the setup. So our customer found himself spending lots of money on developers and test equipment with no date of going life in close sight. It is not uncommon that people spend tens of thousands of dollars on trying things without having anything running afterwards. A few weeks ago he downloaded and tried our windows based solution and was very pleased with what he saw. We met at the REMWAVE headquarters and the more we talked about the feature set the more he was sure we can deliver what he was planning for. What he did not expect and considered being a joke in our first conversation, was that I told him he will be able to place and bill calls within one week. The week is over and he can sign up with his service, place calls, bill them and can see the usage in real time. Now he will start customizing the solution. It was lots of fun and I am sure the VoIP world will hear a lot from this new customer. He has some really awesome ideas of how to conquer the market. And it was not a small installation. More to follow...
